HOUSTON - In the middle of a packed gym early Thursday morning to celebrate his school's upcoming second-round playoff game, Aldine Eisenhower wide receiver Greg Timmons was rewarded for a stellar career by being selected to play in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

The 6-foot-3, 193-pound senior is aware of the rich history of the game. He says it is a big honor to be included among the best of the best in the entire country.

"It's a great accomplishment," said Timmons. "I take pride in receiving this honor and being included among the top players in the United States. It's a great honor to play in this bowl game."

Timmons, his mother and Eisenhower head coach Ray Evans all took in the excitement of the selection ceremony. His entire team, the band, the drill team and the cheerleaders were also all there to support him during the announcement.

Timmons realizes that many of the current top college players, as well as several NFL stars, are alumni of the game. There have especially been many talented Houston-area standouts to play in the bowl and he says that is something that he takes pride in as well. However, he has a slightly broader area that he says he would like to represent.

"I want to represent the city of Houston as there have been some top players from the city there in the past, but I'm really hoping to represent the whole state of Texas," Timmons said. "With the rest of the players from the state, it should help us come out on top in the game."

Timmons is the fourth University of Texas commitment to be selected for the 2009 game, joining Chris Whaley, Tariq Allen and Calvin Howell. He says he and his future teammates have discussed it at great length.

"We keep in touch all the time and talk about the game," he said. "It'll be a good chance to go against the defensive guys in practice there before we get to campus. We're all looking forward to playing together up there and seeing what the future is going to look like at the University of Texas."

Timmons says he is ready to get to Austin, but it will be a little bit delayed from his original plans.

"My plan was that I was going to graduate early and go up there for spring ball but I decided to push it back a semester," he said. "I'm really excited about going up there and I've been talking to the coaches a lot and they're excited about me getting up there, too."

However, his focus right now is completely on Katy Cinco Ranch, his Eisenhower team's opponent in Friday night's second-round Class 5A state playoff game. He says it is a chance to prove all of their doubters wrong.

"We started off the season pretty slow with losses to Hightower and North Shore and people just really started to doubt us because of those two losses," said Timmons. "We've sort of fed off that and we're going to come hard this weekend and hopefully we'll be on top come late Friday night."

The U.S. Army All-American Selection Tour will conclude its trip to the Houston-area on Friday with one final selection from the area.
