Atlanta (Ga.) Douglass athlete Leland Jones named a top five early in the recruiting process and has not veered from his choices.
Rated the No. 19 outside linebacker by Rivals.com , Jones stands 6-foot-2, weighs 215 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds. Although several schools have offered full rides, five schools still sit atop his list of favorites.
“LSU, Clemson, Auburn, Georgia, and Vanderbilt,” he said when asked about his top schools.
LSU has a very good run defense, basically the same as I am running in high school,” he said. “I like the city of Baton Rouge too. I am from Atlanta, so I want to play in a city.
Clemson, I feel they are getting better, and I have a chance to play as a true freshman. Their defense is the same as my high school, too.
Auburn has good coaches and a good, hard-nosed defense. They also send a lot of linebackers to the NFL.
Georgia is just close to home. I like the coaches, and the linebackers coach and the head coach are pretty good people.
Vanderbilt has good academics and I will have a good chance to play as a true freshman.”
Don’t expect Leland to make a decision soon.
“I pretty much plan to commit late,” he stated.
Jones said he has offers from ten different schools, including all five of his favorites. Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Alabama are the other schools to extend invitations to attend their school. He camped at LSU, Auburn, and Clemson this summer.
Leland recorded 94 tackles, 11 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and two interceptions as a junior and plans to major in either communications or zoology. He said this will play a major role in his decision and projects as a full qualifier with a 3.5 GPA and an 880 on the SAT.
