Trey Gibson is close to finalizing a visit to the top school on his
list.
“I'm expecting a call back from UAB pretty soon,” Gibson said. “I talked to them
before Christmas, and they told me they wanted me to come in on either Jan. 10
or Jan. 17. They're the leader for me right now. I like them a lot."
Gibson (6-3, 265, 5.2) said some of the teams who had
been recruiting him have apparently dropped off due to concerns about his
weight. East Carolina had issued an early scholarship offer, but he hasn't
spoken with anyone from the Pirates' staff in more than a month. He's also received some periodic interest from Boston College, N.C. State and South Florida.
"Coach says I play better than a lot of guys out there
who are 300 pounds and get a lot of attention, but the college recruiters seem
to hold that against me," he said. "I'm just looking for a chance to prove
myself."
As a senior, Gibson graded out at 89 percent and
recorded 63 "decleaters." He earned first-team All-Big Bend honors as one of the
top players in the Panhandle region.
