1. These guys are ready for the No. 1 headset

Last week it was mentioned and in turn rebuffed that Ryan Day from Ohio State could be the coach in waiting for the Buckeyes. Regardless of the situation there, Day is one of the hottest names when it comes to assistant coaches ready to take the next step to being a head coach. Here are names I’m watching:

Ryan Day, Ohio State – Day is at a power program, took over for three games and won them all and is a bright, young offensive mind. He will get a really good Power Five job sooner than later.

Tony Elliott, Clemson, Jeff Scott, Clemson – The Clemson offense is strong enough for both co-offensive coordinators to be considered moving forward not only for their coaching ability but their ability to recruit top offensive playmakers.

Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin – The Wisconsin defense plays smart and hard and he’s a name many are keeping an eye on for those reasons. His success in the NFL as a player and his youth are both attractive in recruiting.

Chip Lindsey, Auburn – Auburn’s offense has struggled a bit, but there are more than a few smaller programs keeping an eye on him. The issue? He makes a lot of money as a coordinator and might be waiting for a bigger job to come along. However, the Group of Fives will be showing interest.

Todd Orlando, Texas – He’s done a good job with the defense, was a hot name last year for jobs like SMU and will only continue to rise on the boards of teams if Texas keeps winning.

Mel Tucker, GeorgiaKirby Smart’s staff will start to get poached and Tucker has worked under guys like Nick Saban, Jim Tressel and others as well as having NFL experience. He interviewed for Tennessee last year and will have other big interviews coming.

Jake Spavital, West Virginia – He has a chance to ride the wave of West Virginia’s offensive success this season after average stops at Texas A&M and Cal. If the Mountaineers make a run at the Big 12, and they should, he will get some looks.

Brent Venables, Clemson – He’s always on the list of top candidates although no one has pulled the trigger just yet. Eventually someone will lure him away from Dabo Swinney.

Brian Ferentz, Iowa – He seems to be destined for the MAC when a team is ready to hire and has worked under his father and also Bill Belichick.

2. Call the fire department - we have five burning questions

It’s time for Five Burning Questions and this week we focus on teams looking to take the next step, whether it’s big or small.

1. Can Texas beat Oklahoma this weekend? Yes it can, but will it? I don’t think so. In fact, I have Oklahoma winning by a couple touchdowns.

But even if the Longhorns lose, it doesn’t stop the momentum the program has gained since the loss to Maryland. They are a year or two away from being ready to compete with Oklahoma for big wins like this one. Yes, I know they won under Charlie Strong, but that was an outlier. Look for the Sooners to handle them pretty easily.

2. Can anyone step up and challenge Wisconsin in the Big Ten West? Nope. Who would it be? They already beat Iowa, my sleeper team in the division and the rest of the teams all look very average. Northwestern? No. Purdue? Doubtful. Minnesota, Illinois and Nebraska are all very average teams as well. Wisconsin will win it again with ease.

3. Who will continue to surprise, Colorado or NC State? I think NC State loses to Boston College this weekend but Colorado can continue its run against Arizona State before the big matchup against USC on the road. Both teams could end up with three or four losses easily, but I like Colorado’s chances a bit better.

4. Will either UCLA or Nebraska win a game this year? One of them will win a game, I just don’t know which one. Most likely Nebraska as they still have Bethune-Cookman and Illinois left on the schedule while UCLA could run the table winless. The over-under for wins between the two programs is two and I’d be hard pressed to take the over. Yuck.

5. Who has emerged as a Hot Seat leader? Clay Helton has moved up on the list but what about Bobby Petrino? His team is 2-3 with two worthless wins, he just blew the game against FSU with poor decision-making and Louisville could end up 4-8 or something this year putting him on the hot seat where he wasn’t close to that status heading into the year.

3. Pass me a slice of that humble pie

If you haven’t seen my stupid tweet yet, here it is…

Sometimes you just get things wrong and this is clearly a bad take. Texas Tech fans remind me of it about every second of the day as well they should and the few Chiefs fans I have that follow me like to laugh along.

Mahomes, coming out into the draft, was either going to Brett Favre or an absolute bust because of his arm strength and gunslinger mentality, and so far it looks a lot like the former.

My thought process? There’s no way he can be the next Favre. He’s a system quarterback from the Big 12 who freelanced way too much under Kliff Kingsbury.

Now I look stupid. But it isn’t the first time and won’t be the last, everyone. Haters will be happy to hear that I have Mahomes in my NFL Fantasy Football League and have been playing him over Aaron Rodgers and stand 4-0. So I may be stupid, but I’m not that stupid.

Mahomes, by the way, has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,200 yards with 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions in leading his team to a 4-0 record. Dumb move by the Chiefs right? Ugh.
