Three-point stance: Kyle Allen's decison, QB transfers, Ohio St.

Today’s edition talks about Kyle Allen becoming a huge Charlie Strong fan, the 2016 QB transfers and Ohio State.

1. Strong's new supporter

Former five-star high school quarterback and ex-Texas A&M Aggie Kyle Allen is transferring to Houston and has to be a huge Charlie Strong fan right about now. Why would Allen, who is now playing for an AAC program and is still showing love for his former Aggie teammates who are taught to hate Texas, care about the Longhorns' coach?

Because there is a very good chance that if Strong fizzles next year and doesn’t turn the Longhorns into a Big 12 contender, he could be gone. And who might replace him? The quarterback whisperer is Tom Herman, who did wonders at Ohio State and an even more impressive job in his first year at Houston with Greg Ward, Jr. Obviously, one of the draws for Allen to Houston is Herman and his ability to develop quarterbacks, but what are the chances one of the hottest Group of Five head coaches in the country will be there after Allen sits out his year?

Rumors are strong, no pun intended, that Herman held off taking a bigger job this year because he has his eyes set on Austin. So for Allen, a successful season for Strong at Texas would certainly help him as he hopes that Herman stays around at Houston for a bit. I still think Allen has amazing upside as a pro prospect and just needs one big year at Houston to enter the discussion as a first-rounder down the line.

2. The quarterback transfer epidemic

Speaking of quarterbacks, while fan bases get all happy and excited about their quarterback commitments, allow me to rain on your parade a bit. Fans were excited about the following quarterbacks in the 2015, 2014 and 2013 classes –- Allen, Will Grier, Michael O’Connor, Justice Hansen, Kyler Murray, Ricky Town, Troy Williams, Hayden Rettig, Kenny Hill, Asiantii Woulard, Danny Etling and some others -– all four- or five-star guys who have transferred out of the schools they signed with.

So when you look at this year’s big name commitments – Shea Patterson at Ole Miss, Jacob Eason at Georgia, Feleipe Franks at Florida, K.J. Costello at Stanford, Brandon Peters at Michigan, Austin Kendall at Oklahoma, Jarrett Guarantano at Tennessee, Malik Henry at FSU, Dwayne Haskins Jr. at Maryland or wherever and many others –- you can assume that at least two of them will be at different schools after a couple years.

And it could be more, based on what we are seeing this year. The flurry of recent quarterback transfers I fear is a trend that will continue as signal-callers are promised early playing time, as they all are, and become impatient feeling they should be rushing through their college careers and counting that NFL money after three seasons.

And the rapid coaching changes, whether it be at head coach or coordinator, is also contributing to the problem. Take a look at some of the recent national title contenders or winners and you’ll find transfers at places like Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn (twice) and Notre Dame (a quarterback who transferred out), so the national landscape is already being affected by transferitis. It’s not like this is new, but take a look at the starting quarterbacks in the NFL and you won’t see many of the top guys having moved around in college. In fact, I think it’s a deterrent to success at the pro level as it tends to hinder rather than accelerate development. What happened to the days of waiting your turn?

3. Ohio State could dominate the draft

With nine underclassmen already declaring for the NFL Draft, it’s more clear to me than ever that Ohio State had the most talented roster in college football followed by Alabama and Clemson, who are both playing in the title game. Although that includes a few Buckeyes I'm surprised declared, like Jalin Marshall and Tyvis Powell.

So will Ohio State be in trouble starting next year with all of these losses? Nope. Urban Meyer, the best pure recruiter in the country, will just continue to re-load. If I’m an Ohio State fan, the one thing I don’t worry about is recruiting NFL-caliber talent because Meyer will continue to bring it. I expect Joey Bosa, Michael Thomas and Ezekiel Elliott to be drafted in the first round and Darron Lee, Eli Apple and Bell to be in the second-round range. This kind of success in the NFL Draft will help Meyer continue to lure kids to Columbus.

Throw in seniors like Taylor Decker, a potential first-rounder, and Adolphus Washington, a potential second-rounder as well as Braxton Miller and Joshua Perry and the Buckeyes could own the draft, which could send the 2017 recruiting class over the top. I still don’t understand how this team isn’t playing for the national title, but it sure has been an amazing group to scout.
