Orange (Texas) West-Orange Stark four-star defensive back/athlete Earl Thomas always dreamed of an opportunity to show people that he is an
All-American. He'll now get that chance on Jan. 4 in the Offense-Defense
All-American Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as a defensive back for the
West squad.
"I've always wanted to have the words All-American next to my name," Thomas
said. "I've watched other games the past few years and always wanted a shot
to play in something like that. And now I'm going to get my opportunity.
You must be pretty good to play in a big event such as this."
Thomas is definitely more than pretty good.
Ranked as the nation's No. 10 athlete and a Rivals250 member, Thomas
committed early in the recruiting process to Texas. He committed in
February before the process really even got started for many. While his bio
doesn't list too many offers, make no mistake - he would have been one of
the most heavily recruited players in the Lone Star State.
"I have a lot of people that are going to go to Florida to support me in
the game," Thomas said. "My coaches are coming, and so are a bunch of
people in my family. I plan on using all of the tickets for sure."
Thomas said he has had no doubts about his commitment to Texas.
"I was supposed to take an unofficial visit to LSU back in February, but I
ended up going over to Austin to hang out with (former teammate) Deon
Beasley," Thomas said. "He was telling me how nice it was. I thought they
were overrated, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I ended
up committing right after that.
"They're definitely not overrated now."
Thomas said he's ready to put on a show for the Longhorn fans watching on
ESPNU.
"I hope I have one of my better games there," Thomas said. "I'll be a treat
for everybody to watch. I hope they put me on special teams and on defense.
I return kickoffs pretty well, too. And on defense, I'm a lockdown corner.
I like to be on the other team's best receiver."
Others announced today:
