The Roadies: Pierce College 7-on-7

The versatile athlete showed good quickness out of the backfield, beating defenders with a variety of double moves. Pledger, who has already landed scholarship offers from USC and Washington, had double-digit touchdowns as a freshman and rushed for over 800 yards, so he's already very comfortable heading into his second season. That experience allows him to think less and just react, and he's got the speed to get open with ease. On the defensive side, Pledger kept up with any slot receiver that challenged him.
Best Feet
CB Jermani Brown (2017) | Calabasas, Calif.
Whether it was on his backpedal or running routes on offense, Brown did very well for himself in man-to-man situations. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect showed good lateral quickness and moved fluidly whenever he had to change direction. Brown demonstrated an ability to bump receivers, but also broke quickly on the football whenever he gave up some cushion.
Best Hands
WR Keyshawn Johnson Jr. (2017) | Calabasas, Calif.
Johnson is well seasoned in the passing league environment and that savvy was evident when he set up at the line of scrimmage Saturday. He showed a good understanding of different coverages and was patient through his routes. When the ball came his way, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver was a very reliable target. Johnson has a wide catching radius and, and though he won't blow many away from a size or speed standpoint, he attacked the football with his hands rather than waiting for it.
Super Standout
WR Dymond Lee |
West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade
Given how loaded California is at receiver in the 2016 cycle, Lee is often the forgotten prospect even though he emerged on the radar long ago. Saturday provided a rare glimpse at Lee, who doesn't frequent the passing circuit like others at his position. The four-star wideout shined on the perimeter, toying with cornerbacks and getting open often. He also showed great concentration on a tipped ball that he snagged out of the air and took into the end zone. Lee played some quarterback, too, and didn't look particularly overwhelmed by those responsibilities.
Underclassmen Achivement
QB Matt Corral (2018) | Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian
The buzz is certainly there for Corral, who passed for 16 touchdowns in eight games as a freshman last year. In fact, the expectations are sky high for the promising prospect. An Oaks Christian assistant coach who also trained five-star Malik Henry before he moved to Florida said Corral is more advanced at the same stage of their development. The praise was warranted Saturday as Corral made throws of all lengths and showed terrific touch on the deep ball.
Best Arm
QB Tristan Gebbia (2017) | Calabasas, Calif.
Consistency proved to be the biggest hurdle for Gebbia throughout the event. The pro-style prospect has the feel every position coach looks for and also possesses the arm to make all the throws, but for every great pass there was a blunder. Gebbia put good spin on the ball and looked very comfortable throwing into tight windows, leading his receivers who had forward momentum in their routes. There is no question that the 6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect has all the tools to be one of the top quarterbacks in his class.
