The Latest On Cali DB Byron Velega

While attending the Long Beach Poly (Calif.)- Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei CIF Div I semi-final game Friday night, one player that really stood out and has all season was Poly cornerback Byron Velega. Velega and the rest of the Jackrabbit defense shut down the Monarchs all night to advance to next weekend’s championship final Friday night.
Velaga, 5-10, 180 pounds has the speed to hang with the quickest receivers but is a physical corner as well and really plays the run well. It was the second time in three weeks we’ve seen Velega and he impresses us a little more every time we watch him.

On the recruiting front Velega has three schools he’s looking at with trips set to his two co-leaders.
“I leave for Cal next weekend right when our game is over Friday night,” Velaga said. “Then on January 9, I have a visit set with Oregon. “Those are my two favorites and UCLA is also in the mix as well but I don’t know if I’ll visit there or not. All three have offered and I should be ready to make my decision after my visit to Oregon.”
