Texas tidbits: Horns have possiblities

Decision day for Rivals100 quarterback John Brantley is here, but in the big picture, Brantley is just one possibility for the Longhorns as they continue towards a fast finish to the 2007 class.

After the spring game this past weekend, news of more commitments began to flood out of Austin. Potential five-star in-state prospect Tray Allen made his way to the spring game and he wasn't hiding just how close he was to making a decision afterwards.

"I told them that Austin is probably going to be the place for me and this is probably going to be where I play," Allen said. "My mom told me not to commit yet. She wants to talk things over."

Though Allen appears to be holding off since that report, it's obvious that the Horns are closing in on more players than just Brantley.

Defensive end Richetti Jones says he's going to give everyone a chance, but Texas still leads and has for some time. UT also leads for athlete Lennon Creer that many expected to decide within the last few weeks. Though he hasn't made his trip that he wanted to, the Horns still lead by a large margin.

"Texas is much higher than them (LSU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Nebraska)," Creer said. "It's in-state and I've already been to Texas. I haven't seen the other ones."

It appears that a visit is the only thing separating Creer from a pledge.

However, Longhorn fans look to the Wednesday announcement of Brantely as the most likely to be the next pledge towards pushing the defending National Champions to an eye-popping 18 commitments. After Ryan Mallett was apparently asked for a decision within a few days, the top Texas gunslinger said he was opening up his recruitment instead. This was followed by the news of Brantley's decision.

It's easy to understand why many feel Texas is a very likely destination.

Morgan a lock for Oklahoma?

Between the time that Lancaster, Texas offensive tackle Anthony Morgan came on to the recruiting scene and the present day, his scholarship offer list has increased dramatically.

Even with offers in his hand from top programs such as Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Kansas State and others, Morgan is waiting on one in particular. Since returning from Oklahoma's junior day, Lancaster coach Andrew Jackson told Rivals.com this week that the Sooners lead in a big way.

"He really likes Oklahoma and I don't know if they offered him or not," Jackson said. "It's still up in the air. But when we talked to him afterwards, he said if they offer, that's where he's going."

It's hard to tell just how serious the Sooners are at the current time, but if an offer comes, don't look for Morgan to wait long.

Frazier the next in line at Garland

His teammate, wide receiver Malcolm Williams, made an early commitment to Texas and now Garland defensive end Marquis Frazier is the next highly recruited prospect from the school.

Coach Jeff Jordan who has coached the likes of Brandon Antwine, Dale Dixson, Taurance Rawls, Buddy Brumit, Devin McDowell and numerous other Division I signees during his 18 years coaching at the school.

Now he's got another big one in Frazier.

"He's a talented kid and he's going to be a big sonofagun," Jordan said. "Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Iowa State have offered along with a couple of other schools."

The Aggies are one school that has to feel good about their early position. Considering Florida and Florida State, the other part of his top group of schools have yet to offer, A&M sits very well.

"Florida, Florida State, and A&M are his top three along with Texas," Jordan said. "I don't think (Texas) is going to be able to take him."

Frazier and Antwine, who played along the defensive line, are pretty good friends according to Jordan. That may push the Gators up the list with an offer.

Gators invading Texas?

It's no secret that even teams like Florida, which are located in a talent-rich state, will take a national approach to fill some gaps for recruiting classes. Texas appears to be one of those states that the Gators' coaching staff is dead set on hitting hard.

Seven prospects in the Lone Star state claim Florida offers, including Rivals100 Texas commit John Chiles. The other six uncommitted prospects apparently were early offer prospects from the beginning for Urban Meyer and his staff.

Dallas Madison running back Shawnbrey McNeal, North Mesquite cornerback Larry Rosebud (step-brother of Rivals100 member Richetti Jones), and one of the state's top athletes Ron Brooks are all some of the state's top talent that Florida has made the early effort with.

Brooks, an athlete in every sense of the word, could play a number of different positions on the field from cornerback, safety, receiver, running back, or even as a utility player on special teams. The Gators are in his current top five.

Lancaster duo Anthony Morgan and Stephen Thomas are two prospects that claim Gator offers as well. Rivals100 offensive tackle Tray Allen is also a player that the SEC school offered extremely early.

Desoto linebacker Von Miller, Cedar Hill offensive tackle John Jones, and Richardson Berkner offensive guard Josh LeRibeus do not claim offers from Florida yet. However, they say that the Gator recruiting effort has been a strong one.

Oklahoma State starts in Texas, again

The Cowboys were leading the way in the amount of offers extended to prospects in the state of Texas. So it wasn't real surprising that their first commitment of the 2007 class came from across the Red River.

Waxahachie, Texas offensive center prospect Jason Hannan made his commitment to OSU after his trip to the state where he visited both the Cowboys and the Sooners. Hannan has played all over the offensive line in high school at positions such as guard and tackle.

Hannan saw all he needed to see in Stillwater.

"I just called coach (Curtis Luper) and told him that he doesn't have to worry about me anymore and that I'm ready to be a Cowboy," Hannan said. "I could not pass up the opportunity for that."

Etc.

Kansas State recently offered Aldine safety Curtis Thomas who has the Wildcats in his top five along with Tennessee, LSU, Nebraska, and Florida…Thomas says that he's been researching the Wildcats and likes what he sees. Nebraska apparently could be close to offering several from the Houston area including three from the same school…Houston Chavez trio Harold Turnage, Erik Martin, and Justin Bell are all reporting high interest from the Huskers and could be closing in on an offer. Since his visit to Texas A&M, Rivals100 wide receiver Terrance Toliver has the Aggies tied with LSU for the lead…those close to the situation believe that A&M looks to be the team to beat. Corsicana's trio of top prospects are being lead by offensive guard Courtney Green who is now totaling five offers from Baylor, Ole Miss, TCU, Oklahoma State, and LSU.
