One of the more intriguing prospects in the 2010 class out of the state of Texas is Crockett (Texas) High School's Naquan Lee. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Lee spent most of his sophomore year lined up at defensive end. Heading into his junior season, his pass-catching revealed some tremendous upside at tight end and since then, Lee has been doing some double duty.
"I'm playing tight end and defensive end," Lee said. "I'm playing defensive end more. They call me in on tight end when we get close to scoring and they throw it up to me and give me the ball in the end zone."
As a sophomore, Lee was a starter on the defensive line. Though he was effective and disruptive, he never was able to get a quarterback sack. He has managed to overcome that hurdle as a junior.
"I finally got it," he said. "I finally got that sack. I've got about four or five on the season."
Despite playing primarily at defensive end, Lee has a special ability as a pass-catcher. He has a big frame, is athletic, has great body control and the soft hands of a wide receiver. Those qualities can go a long way towards making Lee a dangerous red zone threat and he likes his role.
Unfortunately, Lee hasn't been able to put up the kind of numbers he would have liked this fall due to some academic issues that kept him out of three games. But now that he is back on track and back on the field, he is confident that those issues are behind him. One school that is happy with his progression is the University of Arkansas.
"Arkansas offered me a full scholarship," he said. "It was about a month or two ago. I had it sent to me in the mail. I didn't know anything about them."
Though he didn't know much about the Razorbacks initially, Lee had hoped to learn more about the program that had expressed an early interest.
"I just want to go anywhere that I can play football," he said. "I had lost the phone number to call them. I was all interested and they had wanted me to come and visit and see the school but I lost the number so couldn't call them."
As Lee continues to see his stock rise and continues to learn the position of tight end, he may have many more phone numbers and offers to keep track of down the line.
