Texas QB wants to visit Syracuse

Could this south Texas quarterback be the next Donovan to lead the Syracuse Orangemen?
Port Arthur Memorial’s Donovan Porterie is in the catbird seat. He has a terrific offensive line to protect him and one of the nation’s best running backs to hand the ball off to.

But he’s not so bad himself.
Porterie (6-foot4, 205 pounds) is climbing the quarterback charts within recruiting circles and is the target of programs ranging from Syracuse and Iowa State to Arkansas and Houston.
Iowa State, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and Tulsa are also close to offering.
“I definitely want to visit Syracuse and Iowa State,” he said. “I could be the next Donovan at Syracuse. I will also be going to Houston’s one-day camp at the end of the month.”
Porterie took over the quarterbacking reigns last season during Memorial’s district and playoff run, and added a new dimension to the teams’ offense.
“I am more of a drop back passer, but I can run when given the chance,” he said. “It’s great to have Jamaal Charles back there with me also to take the pressure off. We’ve got a great line that makes plays for Jamaal. He makes plays for himself and it opens up the passing game for me. I think our system is going to enable us to have a great season next year.”
If the summer is any indication of this upcoming fall, Memorial should have a terrific season. Porterie has already helped his seven-on-seven team qualify for the state tournament in College State in July.
“All I’m focuses on right now is leading this team right now and in the fall,” he said. “I gave up AAU basketball, and am concentrating just on football.”
Porterie is academically qualified after taking the SAT, and is learning the college ropes from his brother who plays receiver at Prairie View A&M.
