Texas QB suffers bad break

One of Texas’ top quarterbacks is likely to miss the entire regular season, which could make things interesting come recruiting season.
But that’s the story with Dickinson, Texas, two-star quarterback Mike Funchess. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Funchess broke his leg back on July 25 while playing baseball.

“He was sliding into second and his spike hung in the dirt,” his father said. “If he gets back for the regular season, it’ll be late.”
Funchess’ injury has definitely put a new spin on his recruitment. He was getting heavy attention from Arizona, Baylor, Iowa, Texas Tech, Tulane and UTEP before the injury. His father said most of the teams are sticking with him, but have yet to offer him a scholarship.
“He still gets three or four letters a day,” his father said. “The ones that were recruiting him are still. A few have even said the ones that backoff, really probably didn’t want you anyway.”
Either way, Funchess and his family know that when the September calling period begins they’ll be able to better gauge where he stands on team’s list.
