Texas QB headed to the WAC

Katy (Texas) Cinco Ranch quarterback J.J. McDermott may have fallen a bit under the radar to most colleges, but after making a November commitment to New Mexico State and leading his team to third round of the playoffs, it looks like the Aggies got a steal.
McDermott, who threw for more than 2,313 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior, received his only scholarship offer from New Mexico State quite a while ago. While he hadn't been there to check out the place, he still had enough information to make a decision.

"I committed a while ago to New Mexico State, around November," McDermott said. "I guess it was the chance to play earl. That was a big part of it. I just felt like it was a good fit for me.
"They spread it out and throw a lot. So, I just felt as a quarterback, that's a good spot."
McDermott was also hearing from schools such as Houston, Utah State, New Mexico and Northwestern throughout the process. His senior season was definitely one to remember as well.
"We went 11-2," McDermott said. "We did well but got beat in third round of the playoffs in overtime by Pearland. All and all though it was a great season."
