Texas LB heading to the Big 12

Sept. 9 is coach Bob Stoops birthday. And he got a late birthday present on Sunday night when Arlington (Texas) Lamar linebacker Garnet Smith committed to the Sooners.
"I had to do what was best for me, and the best thing was to become a Sooner," Smith said earlier this afternoon before practice at Lamar.

"I know that my father thinks that Texas might be the best situation for me, but I really feel in love with coach (Brent) Venables.
"He's the main reason why I'm going to Oklahoma. He didn't sugarcoat his interest in me. He was straight up."
Smith said he was also impressed with the Sooners' style of defense.
"If you watch the linebackers at Oklahoma, they make tackles," he said. "The system is setup for linebackers."
Smith said he's solid on his pledge - even though he received a personal call from Texas coach Mack Brown this afternoon before practice.
"I told him that I've made up my mind," Smith said.
