Texas kicker just wants a shot

Carrollton (Texas) Creekview kicker Kellis Cunningham is looking for any opportunity not just for football but for a good college education.
For kickers such as Cunningham, many schools choose to take other positions first on their target list before looking into special teams players. However, the talented Creekview kicker who has been trained by legend Rocky Willingham feels that opportunity could come knocking at any moment.

"Right now there are a few schools, that if I show them how well I kick, I feel they'll offer," Cunningham said. "I've just basically been working on my fundamentals since I was in 8th grade and I know I have the ability."
"A lot of schools like Texas Tech and Kansas like that ability but want to see how many other positions they get and if they don't fill up, I'll get the offer."
Texas Tech, like many of the schools have also offered the kicker the opportunity to be a walk-on player during his first year and possibly earn his scholarship after the freshman year.
Though that may be big for some prospects, Cunningham just wants a shot at a great education. That has determined his group of favorites.
"After going through all the camps I've gone through, schools like Texas Tech, Arizona, and probably Kansas are the ones I'm looking at the hardest," Cunningham said. "I'm going off of how well I'm treated by the coaches and what kind of education I'm going to get there."
This next weekend, LSU will be the next stop on the Cunningham kicking tour. If LSU, or any other school jumped out with an offer, it doesn't mean a sure commitment will follow.
"When that does happen, first thing I'll do is talk to my parents," he said. "With a decision about a school, you need to talk it over and really think hard about it. I'd have to make sure it's the right place for me, regardless of whether I'm playing football or not."
Cunningham was a 10-5A honorable mention all-district kicker for his junior performance.
