Copperas Cove, Texas safety Joseph Leary is one of the top defenders to watch for the class of 2007 since he's been racking up honors going back to his sophomore year. The hard-nosed prospect is already receiving mail, but hasn't looked into recruiting that much just yet.

At 5-foot-11, 180-pounds, Leary spent most of his high school career at strong safety. As a senior, Leary will get a crack at the free safety position where he'll be leading the team in the secondary. College programs are taking notice.
"Yeah, my cousin has all my mail right now from colleges but I haven't seen it yet," Leary said. "I know there has been some from Oklahoma State, Arizona, Texas A&M, and Baylor. Hopefully there are some offers in there.
"I don't really have any favorites yet though. I just would like to play in the Big 12 if possible."
With the way his high school career has gone, he'll get that chance. As a sophomore, he was an honorable mention all-state selection and was the district newcomer of the year. As a junior, he followed that up with first-team all-district honors.
"I'm a hard worker and I do what it takes to help my team out doing whatever they need for me," Leary said. "I stay focused and pay attention, so I always am aware of what's happening on the field around me."
Leary says during his senior year, he'll get down to business with not only his season but recruiting. He has not thought about camps yet, but knows he'd like to leave Copperas Cove on a high note.
"I'd like to be an all-state selection, and if I can get more than that, then that would be great," he said. "I haven't been on visits yet. Hopefully, I'll see what colleges are looking at me soon and start taking those.
"I'll probably make a decision during the season, but not at the last minute or anything."
