Texas DB heading to Big Ten

Kerry Cooks knows how to spot talent. He's been doing it for years, and it looks like he's found another super sleeper in the Dallas Metroplex in Shelton Johnson, a solid defensive back from Carrollton (Texas) Hebron.
The 6-foot, 170-pound Johnson talked with Cooks last night and told him he was ready to become a Badger.

"I just gave my verbal commitment," Johnson, who was recruited to play safety, said. "I was just thinking about it, and I only had two offers. Coach Cooks said it was about time for me to make my choice, and I felt right about the decision. So I committed.
"He was happy with the news. He was excited. I haven't gotten the chance to talk to the head coach yet, but that's when I guess it'll be official, official."
Johnson has never visited Madison, but he hopes to be up there in late August for a visit. He said he was also offered a scholarship by Utah, and while he said he's committed to Wisconsin he didn't totally shut the door on any local schools that might be interested.
"I'm really interested in Wisconsin, and that's the place for me now," he said. "But if an closer school were to show interest, I might re-think my decision. My family means a lot to me, and I was hoping I could go closer to home. But it'd be tough to change my mind at this point. They're a great program, and they've been to a bunch of bowl games in a row.
"Wisconsin is a very good program."
