Texas CB Erick Hallett still a hidden gem in Houston area

Houston-area cornerback Erick Hallett is getting some looks this spring and if all goes as planned, should be turning that interest into offers very soon.

Two weeks ago, at the Speed Power Exposure Elite Camp in Sulphur, Louisiana, Hallett had one of the best performances by a defensive back both in one-on-one drills and during the 7-on-7 session. He’s also showed well at several other events early this offseason like the Army Underclassmen Combine in early January.

College teams certainly have him on their radar, but seem to be waiting till they make their rounds this spring to see him working in person to pull the trigger on offering him. Three teams in particular have been in contact with him most recently and could represent the first group of teams to make a move on him.

IN HIS WORDS

On Iowa State

“I’d say about 70 percent,” Hallett said on how close he thinks he is to picking up an Iowa State offer. “They have talked to me a little bit and just said they were checking in to see how I was doing and that they would come to see me this spring.”

“My interest in them would be high,” he added. “The competition level around the Big 12 is really high.”

On Duke

“They said the same thing about wanting to come back to see me in the spring, so we just need to keep the conversation up,” he said. “They’re a prestigious school academically, so that’s something of high interest to me. I want to be an architect, so I am going to have to look into what they have for that.”

On UCF

“I like the program a lot, actually,” he said. “I like Florida and am really interested in them. My grandparents are out there and my mom was raised out there too.”

RIVALS REACTION

The 2018 defensive back crop in Texas is very strong. While that hasn’t led to an early offer for Hallett, the eyeballs on his region will eventually start focusing on him as some of the more widely-known prospects’ offer lists continue to grow. He’s proven to be a strong cover corner with excellent ball skills and a penchant for picking off passes.

He holds an offer from Stephen F. Austin, but by the end of the spring, will no doubt have collected several FBS offers.
