MORE PERRONI: Texas recruiting rankings

Rivals.com analyst Brian Perroni will be covering the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament in College Station, which runs from Thursday through Saturday. He offers a few story lines that he'll be watching while at Texas A&M this week.

Though not quite as teeming with talent as past years, the tournament still features quite a few big-name prospects. Playing in the small school bracket on Thursday and Friday is Rivals100 wide receiver and Texas Tech commit Dominique Wheeler, as well as Rivals250 cornerback Justin Thomas. West Virginia commit Ford Childress, Miami commit Preston Dewey, TCU commit Austin Aune, Tulsa commit Dane Evans and Rice commit Luke Turner will all be playing quarterback in the small school division.

The large school bracket on Friday and Saturday is headlined by Rivals250 Texas A&M quarterback commit Matt Davis and Texas Tech three-star quarterback commit Clayton Nicholas. Other top prospects in the division include Notre Dame commit Nicky Baratti, Texas commit Bryson Echols, Texas A&M commit Corey Thompson, Baylor commit Kiante' Griffin and TCU commit Kolby Listenbee.

Austin Lake Travis has won four Class 4A state titles on the gridiron in the fall but the team has always come up a bit short in 7-on-7 play. That was not the case a year ago as the Cavaliers took home the large school championship. However, Texas Tech quarterback signee Michael Brewer has graduated and the team is relying on Rice commit Colin Lagasse, a converted wide receiver, to man the offense. He is not nearly the passer that Brewer or Garrett Gilbert ahead of him were. The team has also been without TCU commit Griffin Gilbert this summer due to an injury suffered in spring ball. It will certainly be an uphill battle but fans know not to count out Lake Travis.

This year's tournament features quite a few Class of 2013 and 2014 prospects. East Bernard quarterback Ty Slanina, West Orange-Stark cornerback Colin Janice, Prosper wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr., Lake Travis wide receiver Dannon Cavil and running back Varshaun Nixon, DeSoto running back Dontre Wilson, Katy Cinco Ranch running back Jamel James, Tyler Lee running back LaQuintas Wallace, Dallas Jesuit wide receiver Jake Oliver, Katy running back Adam Taylor, Plano quarterback Richard Lagow, Klein Collins running back Marcus Goodson and Lewisville Hebron running back Dezmond Wortham all have the potential to be Top 100 prospects in the state.
