Terps making push for Tennessee QB

The Maryland Terrapins are making a strong push with one of Tennessee’s brightest prospects.
“I’m pretty much open right now, but my top one is Maryland,” said three-star Memphis Melrose quarterback Antonio Heffner. “They called me tonight. I just got through talking with coach Banks. He told me that I definitely had an offer with them, that it would be in the mail sometime soon, and wanted to know if I was still interested. I said definitely. I’m going to try and visit there for the Duke game on Oct. 11.

“Ole Miss called tonight, too, but I missed that one.”
Heffner (6-3, 180, 4.5) said the Terps are offering him the opportunity to play football and walk-on with the basketball team.
“I like the idea of that because I love both sports,” he said. “Plus, their quarterback situation is looking pretty good for next year. I think I’d have a fair chance to go there and compete for some playing time as a freshman.”
In addition to Maryland, Heffner has offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, North Carolina and Tennessee.
“I’ll be going to Alabama for their game against Oklahoma this weekend,” he said. “They’re in my top five right now with Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Maryland… maybe LSU in there, too.”
As a junior, Heffner passed for 1,439 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for three touchdowns.
On Friday, he leads Melrose (1-1) into a highly-anticipated showdown with Ridgeway. He said coaches from Tennessee, Alabama and Ole Miss are scheduled to be on hand to watch a number of top prospects on both teams. Ridgeway is led by quarterback Will Hudgens. In addition to Heffner, Melrose features running back Joseph Doss, wide receiver Corey Kizer and safety Ellix Wilson.
Academically, Heffner maintains a 2.8 GPA and is waiting on his test scores.
