Eric Young said an official visit
to Maryland left him both surprised and impressed this weekend.
"It was really nice," said Young, a member of the
Rivals.com
Southeast Top 100 team and the
No. 8 offensive tackle in the nation. "I just kind of threw that one together at
the spur of the moment, but I had a real good time. The head coach (Ralph
Friedgen) was really cool. I got to establish a little bit of a relationship
with him that I didn't have before.
"They've got a real nice program there. Before I went up
there, they were telling me, 'Make sure you watch our (Peach) bowl game against
Tennessee. You don't want to miss that.' And they went out and put a hurtin' on
my boys (30-3). When I went up there to visit, they were all saying, 'See what we were
talking about.'
"I think they've got a great program going. The only
thing about it is being so far away from home. But they definitely gave me
something to think about."
Young (6-4, 260, 4.8) says South Carolina still holds a
slight lead for his services, and pointed out that proximity to home is really
weighing on his mind at this point. He'll visit the Gamecocks on Jan 17. The
other visits include: Clemson (1/10), Tennessee (1/24) and North Carolina
(1/31).
"I'm trying to stay open-minded," he said. "I haven't
rushed my decision yet, so there's no sense in doing that now. I'll probably
wait all the way until signing day to decide."
