Terps, Cavs on sophomore early

James Smith out of Stafford, Va. is a solid sophomore quarterback and defensive back prospect.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder who runs a quick 4.5-second 40-yard dash also saw time as a return man where he averaged 28 yards a return and took two punts and two kickoff returns for touchdowns. This past season he helped Stafford to a 3-7 record as he was MVP on the team and all-area.

"He definitely is going to be a top football player and a gem for somebody," said Stafford head coach Roger Pierce. "He's a good student too, and I think he's going to have all the pieces of the puzzle. He's a very versatile guy that competes at a very high level."
As for what position he'll play in college, Pierce thinks he's a receiver.
"I can really see him being a wide receiver type by the way he jumps," he said. "This year he took an interception for 80 yards and a touchdown, and he's a very versatile guy that competes at a very high level. He can play at many positions on the next level, it just depends what the school needs.
So far Smith has seen early interest from Maryland and Virginia.
Smith has no plans yet scheduled for this summer.
