Skinny: One of Tennessee’s top players is also shaping up to be one of the South’s best fullback prospects for 2004.
Brentwood Academy’s David Holbert has already received three scholarship offers from SEC schools, according to coach Carlton Flatt.
“David's heard from just about the whole SEC. LSU, Auburn and Tennessee have all offered early,” he said. “For them to do that at this point tells me they think he’s pretty special. Tennessee usually doesn’t offer many guys early, especially from in-state. We sent a film to LSU, and they came back with an offer within two days, so that’s just another example of what some of these coaches think of him.”
Holbert has the prototype fullback build, but is more agile than some players at that position.
“He’s a three-sport kid who also plays basketball and runs track,” Flatt said. “He’s got real nice feet. Then you add his strength and hands, you’ve got an awfully good player.”
Flatt said he wasn’t aware of any favorites for Holbert at this point, but admitted the lure of Tennessee and the Volunteers’ early offer could be hard to pass up.
Holbert has an invitation to the Nike camp at Auburn, but Flatt said he’s unsure if his player will attend. He’s not picked any summer camps to attend at this point.
