Junior to Watch: Akeem Robinson
School: Miami (Fla.) Carol City High School
Position: Tight End
Size and speed: Robinson is 6-foot-5, weighs 255 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds.
Favorite Schools: Miami, Florida, Florida State.
Skinny: If Akeem Robinson creates images of a power forward on the football field, there’s a good reason for that.
“He’s a kid who’s always been known around here as a real good basketball player,” Carol City coach Walt Frazier said. “That’s always been his game, but last year I was able to talk him into playing football. He was really coming on and becoming a nice player until he hurt his shoulder about five or six games into the season. At that time, I thought it was in his best interest to shut it down and get himself healthy for basketball.
“He’s still kind of raw at this point, in terms of being a football player, but he’s got all kinds of potential. The scouts love his size and athleticism.”
Robinson has received early interest from all the top Florida programs and “nearly every big-time school in the country,” Frazier said. In addition to Miami, Florida and Florida State, they’ve received letters from the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Oklahoma and N.C. State.
“He’s got nice, soft hands from basketball,” Frazier said. “His blocking is getting better, too. He’s been getting stronger, developing his body into more of a football frame.”
Frazier said Robinson is also a solid student who should be fully qualified.
