TCU picks up commitment from talented athlete Josh Foster

The football team out at Newton, Texas, has drawn plenty of attention on the recruiting trail since its state championship run from last year, and on Friday evening, Josh Foster’s commitment to TCU was the first of several more expected to come to pass before the start of the season.

The three-star athlete made his second visit to the campus at the end of July with his family, and after seeing everything the school had to offer in addition to his relationship with the staff, he said that he knew it felt right to make his decision. Foster also visited in January and picked up his offer from the Horned Frogs in February.

“It was just that I really enjoy being with all of the coaches and the area was real nice when I was up there,” he said. “It’s someplace I felt like I wanted to be, somewhere I really felt comfortable being at.

“Everything that I saw out there was all real nice – the stadium, the weight room and everything – I loved it. The coaches are great, meeting some of the players was nice, it wasn’t one thing that stood out, it was everything.”

Foster said that his relationship with cornerbacks coach Jeremy Modkins was the most influential in his decision to commit. He also said that as his recruitment by TCU became more earnest, he’s become more familiar with head coach Gary Patterson.

“[Modkins] is a real nice guy,” he said. “I can talk to him like I’ve known him for a long time. He’s just someone that I can feel real comfortable talking to. He’s a guy with a lot of energy and just a lot of fun to be around.

“[Patterson] has called me a few times, so I’ve been talking to him more. I don’t know him quite as well as I do Coach Modkins, but he seems like a really nice, cool guy.”

Foster has yet to take an official visit to TCU, but expects to do so in the fall. This summer, he had taken officials to Arkansas and Utah. Foster said that distance was ultimately a deal-breaker for the Utes’ chances of landing him, but the Razorbacks made his decision a tough one.

He said that he hasn’t thought about whether or not he’ll sign in December and isn’t planning on enrolling early, so perhaps the door isn’t completely shut on one last bit of drama before all is said-and-done.

“If I wasn’t going to TCU, Arkansas would be my next school for sure,” he said. “I could have seen myself being at Arkansas, too. I think they still might recruit me because Coach (Jeff) Traylor is from down around this area. I’m sure I won’t hear from him as much, but I can see him still talking to me.”

As for some of his teammates – namely four-star recruits Darwin Barlow and Tamauzia Brown – Foster’s commitment will be watched closely as a possible scale-tipper in their recruitments. Barlow in particular, has been looked to in connection with Foster, as the pair have openly discussed their desire to continue playing together in the past.

That might not be as strong of a sentiment as it once was but it should remain a factor. Four-star Aledo, Texas, defensive end Colt Ellison committed to TCU earlier this month after teammate Wyatt Harris committed to the Frogs in January.

“At first, me and Darwin started out wanting to go to the same school,” he said. “Now, we’re kind of like, if we go to the same school that would be nice, but we’re not trying to force that. It’s just wherever we feel good for ourselves and our own decisions.”

Outside of one-or-two other highly-ranked targets, Foster could end up as the last player in this year’s secondary haul, but said the only indication he was given about when he could expect to see playing time was up to him. The honesty of the staff was one of the refreshing things about TCU’s recruitment of him but Foster expects to make the most of every opportunity right from the jump.

“I plan on making an impact as soon as possible,” he said. “I want to get up there and working with the team, get to know the defense and how it works. They haven’t been promising me early playing time just to get me to come up there. A lot of coaches will do that – they’ve only told me that the best players are going to play.”
