North Carolina defensive end/linebacker Hilee Taylor is planning on making his decision in the coming days. He has several offers to choose from, but is he leaning in any direction?
"Right now I'm torn between several schools," said the versatile defender from Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland. "South Carolina, Virginia Tech, NC State, Clemson, East Carolina and Tennessee are right up there about even with each other. They've all offered except Tennessee."
When is he planning on choosing his college destination?
"I know last month I was a little unsure of things. I tried to predict when I would make my decision, but I was never really set on that. But now that I've had more time to think it through I'm just about ready to get it over with. I'll make my decision sometime before August 22nd. That's when the season starts, and I want to be done with recruiting before then."
Taylor runs the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds, and that speed combined with his power makes him an attractive prospect for the schools that are recruiting him. Virginia Tech and South Carolina would use him as a linebacker, while the other schools on his list aren't sure whether he would play there or grow into a defensive end.
What will be the biggest factors in his decision?
"Academics are first in priority," said Taylor. "Then I'll consider the quality of the football program. And it's not just things like that. There are things I like about each program that the others don't really offer.
"NC State and East Carolina would allow me to stay in-state and South Carolina has the huge stadium and a great football atmosphere. Virginia Tech is known for having that aggressive defense. There are things like that about all of them that I'll consider."
Taylor camped at North Carolina, NC State and South Carolina this summer and also visited the Hokies. With no clear-cut leader and his decision day approaching, Taylor plans on narrowing things down quickly.
"I don't think I'm going to do it by eliminating one school at a time," he said. "I'm just going to think about it and weigh all the pros and cons, then choose the best one out of the list I gave you. It's going to be a gut feeling based on everything I've seen and heard."
Last year Taylor recorded 91 tackles, had six sacks and recovered four fumbles.
