Statistics: As a junior, he recorded 100 tackles, eight quarterback hurries, three sacks, three interceptions, and two blocked kicks.
Honors: Was selected honorable mention Class 4A all-state by the FSWA.
Favorite Schools: Florida State, Florida, Miami, Georgia.
Skinny: Tampa Bay Tech coach Mike Bradley thinks he’s got the prototype outside linebacker in Maurice Crum.
“He’s exactly what colleges want when they’re looking for an outside linebacker,” Bradley said. “He’s got good size. He’s going to wind up around 225 or 230. He’s got the speed just under 4.6. He’s smart. He’s aggressive, likes to hit. And maybe the one thing that sets him apart is his cover skills. They way people spread you out these days and try to isolate guys on linebackers, he takes that away. They tested him over and over last year, and he kept making plays. Some people think he’s so good covering he could be an Ulracher type at strong safety. Either way, he’s one heckuva player.”
Crum also excels off the field, sporting a core GPA of 3.3 and taking advanced courses in the health magnet program in preparation to go into dentistry.
“He’s a fine all-around person,” said Bradley, “a leader on and off the field. He’s a kid I put in charge of a lot of stuff in the locker room, the weight room and the track when we do conditioning. He’s a natural leader. Kids respect him and follow him.”
Schools lining up with early interest in Crum include “all the Florida schools and almost the entire Big Ten,” Bradley said. “He’s also hearing from some others like Kentucky, Louisville, Kansas State, Kansas, Oregon and Oregon State.
“He grew up a big Florida State fan. I think that’s where he’d really like to go if he got the opportunity, but at this point he’s just real excited about having all these schools from one end of the country to the other showing interest in him.”
Crum plans to attend one of the Nike combines in Florida this spring. He’s yet to decide which summer camps he’ll visit, but Florida State is likely, according to Bradley.
