Take Two returns with a daily offering tackling a handful of issues in the college football landscape. Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney lays out the situation and then receives takes from Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and a local expert from the Rivals.com network of team sites.
THE STORYLINE
It was an incredibly busy offseason on the college football coaching carousel as 13 Power Five programs changed staffs, including some spotlight programs.
Nebraska was one of those schools as coach Scott Frost came to Lincoln after guiding UCF to an undefeated season a year ago. He grew up in Nebraska. He played QB for the Huskers. And after successful coaching stints at Oregon, UCF and elsewhere, Frost is back to return Nebraska’s program to national prominence.
Frost was a major offseason hire but tagging him No. 1 is certainly a statement. Jimbo Fisher left Florida State for Texas A&M. He won a national championship with the Seminoles. Chip Kelly is back in college football at UCLA after stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. He led Oregon to the national title game and is an offensive innovator.
Dan Mullen to Florida or Willie Taggart to Florida State or Jeremy Pruitt to Tennessee or Kevin Sumlin to Arizona. The list is long and impressive. Was Frost the best hire of the offseason or does someone else deserve that title even more?
FIRST TAKE: SEAN CALLAHAN, HUSKERONLINE.COM
"It's hard to argue Scott Frost is not the best hire of the offseason. So many things go into labeling a coach a ‘great hire.’ I think it starts with fit, and of all the hires made this offseason Frost is No. 1 in that category. He's also proven what he could do at UCF, taking a team from 0-12 to 13-0 in just two years, and going 19-7 over his time in Orlando.
"I think you also have to look at his quarterback development and recruiting at both Oregon and UCF, as he's developed two of the better guys over his last five years in college football. If you are making an argument for another coach, Chip Kelly would be right with Frost, as the setup for him at UCLA is about as good as it gets."
SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM
“I’d say there is a lead group. It’s hard to say he’s better than Jimbo Fisher and it’s hard to say he’s better than Chip Kelly. Based on what he did last year and the fit at Nebraska with him being a former player, I think you can say it’s the best fit.
“We pretty much know it’s going to be successful to a level that they haven’t had in a while there. I don’t know if it’s the best hire but it’s the best fit of the offseason.”
