Five-star Devon Williams is one of the best prospects in the 2018 class. He’s also one of the most mysterious because the Lancaster (Calif.) Antelope Valley does not talk about his recruitment much.

This summer, the 6-foot-4 210-pound five-star athlete who could excel at wide receiver, safety or outside linebacker said this summer that Oregon was the front-runner, but since that time he’s released a top list, taken visits and continues to work through the recruiting process.

Alabama, Cal, Colorado, Florida State, Nebraska, Oregon, USC, UCLA, Utah and Washington State made Williams’ initial cut, but that was back in July and a lot has changed in the college football landscape that could have influenced his thinking since that time.

A recent visit to Utah went well, but many other trips are expected to happen before he makes a decision.

Do the Ducks still lead? Will USC continue to be a major contender along with UCLA and others in the Pac-12? Might Williams be another five-star that leaves the state and possibly goes to the SEC, Big Ten or another conference?

At this point, not much is known because Williams does not talk much. Which makes his recruitment that much more mysterious and interesting.

FIRST TAKE: A.J. JACOBSON, DUCKSPORTSAUTHORITY.COM

“Williams is one of the primary remaining targets for Oregon's class of 2018, and the interest level both ways has been high throughout Williams’ recruitment. When I asked the Oregon commitments at this summer’s elite camps who they thought is the most likely prospect to join them, most of them mentioned Williams. Oregon is still in as good or better position than anybody else for his pledge, although it would not shock if he chose to attend college in the L.A. area.

“Although Oregon currently has two committed 2018 wide receivers with two other athletes likely to start their careers on offense, the Ducks would like to give Williams a try at receiver first. Depth-chart wise, they are in need of immediate reinforcements, and he is the type of talent who could help right away.”

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“A lot of people think he’s going to go to Oregon and he would be a very good fit for what they do. Willie Taggart is a very good recruiter, so I would say you have to assume Oregon is the leader.

“But until he pulls the trigger, he doesn’t strike me as a kid who’s going to pick an in-state school just because. He wants to go to a place where they could promise him some things and I know Oregon will promise him some things when it comes to being involved in the offense right away. Some of those other programs might do the same thing, but they have more depth. That’s a young Oregon team and he’s the type of guy who could make an immediate impact.”
