THE STORYLINE

According to reports, Texas A&M plans to fire coach Kevin Sumlin after the LSU game this weekend and the rumors have persisted for weeks now that the Aggies’ top target is Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher.

Fisher’s name has floated in coach openings for a long time now - remember how rampant the speculation was that he would leave Florida State for LSU - and so maybe this is wishful thinking on A&M’s part. Or could there be something in the works?

The FSU coach has a long relationship with Texas A&M athletics director Scott Woodward and the Seminoles’ disastrous season could put Fisher in an uncomfortable position this offseason - having to fire some assistant coaches.

Would those two factors be enough to compel Fisher to leave Tallahassee for College Station? Another significant financial factor would be a huge buyout Fisher would be walking away from at Florida State if he opted to leave for the Aggies. Would it be worth it?

Fisher has not denied any reports, probably because Sumlin has not officially been fired yet. He’s said in the past he doesn’t talk about jobs, but expect a busy weekend on the coaching rumor carousel.

FIRST TAKE: IRA SCHOFFEL, WARCHANT.COM

“I do think this situation might be a little different than LSU for a couple of reasons. No. 1, FSU is coming off of a very disappointing season, and Fisher is going to have to make some difficult choices about the direction of his program this offseason.

“As a head coach who speaks frequently about the need for loyalty on a coaching staff, Fisher can't feel good about needing to replace some of his assistant coaches. That's something he wasn't dealing with when LSU came calling; he was in the midst of a five-year run of 10-win seasons.

"Texas A&M also could be attractive to Fisher because of all the money the Aggies have invested into their facilities and other aspects of the program. At the end of the day, I think it's more likely that he stays at FSU if he receives that offer. But it wouldn't surprise me if he gave it a long, hard look.” – Schoffel

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“There is a $39 million buyout and with that kind of security in coaching, he’s not going to say, ‘I don’t need the money, I’m just going to leave.’ It would seem preposterous for that to happen.

“We all heard the Jimbo-to-LSU rumors before. It’s all positioning and maybe it could get him more money but I don’t know why you would leave Florida State for Texas A&M.” – Farrell
