THE STORYLINE

Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco’s five-star quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei was back at Clemson this weekend for another trip.

He’s the No. 1 prospect in the 2020 class and serious about the Tigers, returning to campus for the South Carolina game with Bosco assistant coach Terry Bullock and his dad, Dave, his first time seeing the place for himself.

Uiagalelei is serious about Clemson. However, Oregon is also high on his list, he recently took a visit to Auburn and others continue to pursue Uiagalelei, who finished his junior season completing more than 72 percent of his passes for 3,251 yards with 47 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for six scores.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney landed the No.1 player in the 2018 class in quarterback Trevor Lawrence and that has worked out pretty well this season. Can Swinney now go to California for the top-rated player in the country and get Uiagalelei?

TAKE ONE: PAUL STRELOW, TIGERILLUSTRATED.COM

“The Tigers have to be construed as in outstanding shape to score Uiagalelei now that his father had the opportunity to come see the program for the first time and potentially sign off on Clemson as his destination. They’ve had the momentum since the summer and done nothing to relinquish it. And if you go look back, this is exactly the time when Swinney and staff closed the deals on Lawrence, Hunter Johnson and Chase Brice, too.

“Clemson has recruited at a high level for most of this decade. But it felt like the Tigers took it to the next level two years ago when they plucked five-star Tee Higgins from Tennessee’s back yard two years ago. Then to pull five-stars Justyn Ross and Jackson Carman away from in-state suitors Nick Saban and Urban Meyer last year – it’s a shocker when just one of those circumstances occur, let alone the double play.

“To extend their reach to California for the nation’s No. 1-ranked prospect overall would be the latest notch for a Clemson belt that’s running out of holes.”

TAKE TWO: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“Because of DeShaun Watson, because of Lawrence (and Tajh Boyd wasn't bad either), Uiagalelei is interested in Clemson. They’ve produced quarterbacks and their offense is fun and exciting to play in. Swinney has proven he can recruit anybody, beating Saban last year for Ross, beating Meyer for Carman.

“It doesn’t matter where he’s recruiting. He can pull anybody from anywhere. He’s recruiting on a level of Alabama and Ohio State so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he ended up at Clemson. Just let Lawrence play for essentially a year and move on and take over to be the next guy who gets drafted to the NFL out of Clemson.”
