Sween leads state in passing yards

Quarterback Karsten Sween (6-2, 207, 4.72) from Ridgecrest (Calif.) Burroughs has started out his senior season on fire, leading the state in passing yards.
In five games, Sween has thrown for 1,703 yards and 17 touchdowns thus far this season leading Burroughs to a 3-2 record while playing a tough non-conference schedule.

Burroughs coach Jeff Steinberg has a pretty good idea why his quarterback has been so successful this season.
“Karsten has a great understanding of how defenses work,” Steinberg said. “Through our first five games we have literally seen five different defenses.”
“Karsten has come up big in all five games. He’s thrown for over 1,700 yards to lead the state. Karsten is making all the throws and he goes through all his progressions. He’s playing football at a high level right now.”
Despite all of Sween’s early success, his only only from a Division I school is from Wyoming.
According to Steinberg, Sween is getting recruiting action from Montana State, Fresno State, UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State and Purdue.
As a junior, Sween was selected all-state underclass, all-CIF, all-county, all-area and all-league.
“Karsten is a coach’s dream as a quarterback,” Steinberg said. “He is one of the hardest workers you will ever find. Karsten is always trying to find a way to improve. He doesn’t hang his hat on his stats.”
Karsten sets his standards high and once he reached them, he sets them higher. It’s not the stats that he’s thinking about, it is the overall play and the stats are just a by product that his aims are achieved.”
Karsten can make all the throws. He can make the out throw to the wide side of the field. I think the greatest thing Karsten has developed is timing. He throws the ball on the break and on time.”
