Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith five-star defensive end Josh Sweat suffered a serious knee injury in the second quarter of his game on Friday night.
The No. 5-rated national prospect was carted off following an extra point attempt in the second quarter and brought to a local hospital. He was diagnosed with a dislocated knee. He is set for an MRI this week when the swelling around the knee goes down, according to his coach Rich Morgan.
Sweat was scheduled to take an official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend but that, for obvious reasons, did not take place. That visit has not yet been rescheduled. Georgia, Florida State and Oregon are also scheduled to host Sweat on official visits during October. A commitment from Sweat, an early graduate, was expected to come sometime between November and Christmas.
Prior to his injury, Sweat was his dominant self against Chesapeake (Va.) Western Branch. He had six tackles and hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass.
Oscar Smith went on to win 56-14, but the mood was subdued after the game due to Sweat's injury. Morgan knew Sweat's injury was the bigger story for his team.
"I just explained to (my team) that as far as Josh goes, he's the best player in the state, probably in the country," Morgan said of his Under Armour All-American. "He's an even better kid and better student than he is a football player. That's just a credit to him as a person. These things should not happen to kids like him. He doesn't care about the accolades, the glory. He's not like other kids out there on Twitter saying, 'look at me, look at me.' He just goes out and cares about his team."
Morgan said he felt helpless while Sweat was being attended to by trainers.
"It's frustrating. I know it's apart of football and have been in this a long time, but it's a frustrating part of football and the worst part of football," he said. "I care more about him as a person than I do a football player, and to see him laying there is one of those things that there's no answers for and makes you have second thoughts about a lot of stuff."
