The top four for three-star cornerback Josh Shelton of Mount Juliet (Tenn.) includes two teams from the SEC and two that play at the FCS level. Conventional wisdom would seem to indicate the smaller programs might not have a chance, but Shelton insists they do.
"People may be surprised, but I'm giving every school a shot," Shelton said. "Every school is worth a look. We'll see what comes down. It's my decision. I don't care if you like it or not."
Arkansas and Vanderbilt, both of which have offered, are the SEC programs under consideration. Alabama State and Tennessee State, both historically black schools, round out his top four.
"I have to say Alabama State and Tennessee State are recruiting me the hardest," Shelton said. "I'm in love with (historically black colleges and universities) and just the whole atmosphere. I've been going to TSU games ever since I can remember. It's just like home away from home. I just love everything about it. When you come to a game, the band is pumping the music. Man, that's special."
According to Shelton, who has visited each of his leaders, he speaks with coaches from both Arkansas and Vanderbilt a couple times a week.
"I like the whole prime-time atmosphere," Shelton said. "Arkansas really sticks out to me football wise. They've been winning, and it's always good to be part of a winning tradition. Vandy is on the come up. They've got a new coach and they're putting in a lot of work over there."
For Shelton ,a decision could come soon."
"I might do it in September," Shelton said. "That's what I'm looking at now."
