THE STORYLINE

Boston College scored big when it landed former three-star linebacker Trevin Wallace as the Eagles took a shot on a player who was injured in his junior season and then didn’t have much film from the offseason because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But as word got out on just how talented the Jesup (Ga.) Wayne County prospect was more SEC teams got involved and Boston College’s grip started to slip on his commitment. In recent days, Wallace backed off the ACC pledge and reopened his recruitment.

Auburn, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee are five SEC programs in the mix for Wallace, who said he will still consider Boston College, but it now looks like staying closer to home will be in the cards.

South Carolina might get quickly involved with Wallace once the Gamecocks hire a coach. And Georgia is sniffing around more, although the Bulldogs haven’t offered yet.

Boston College landed Wallace, and that was big. But the big-time linebacker is back on the board and could be headed to the SEC.

LOCAL REACTION

“This one hurts. Trevin Wallace is a player the BC staff has prioritized and prized from the start of this recruiting cycle. They really liked the kid a lot, considered him all but a can't-miss recruit with multipositional versatility and all the tools to make it big at the collegiate level - and even beyond.

"But I think they knew it was going to be a tall order to keep a kid like that from the SEC when those schools started to offer and push hard for him. Jeff Hafley is improving Boston College very quickly, both on the field, in terms of perception, and in recruiting. This is going to be the Eagles' best class in a while, even without Wallace. But I probably would have considered him the crown jewel. They'll be OK, but it's a loss.” - Justin Rowland, EagleAction.com

NATIONAL REACTION

“This is a bad one because Wallace reminds me of Harold Landry as a player who was so successful for BC and had interest from others down South late, but stuck with BC. The now four-star linebacker is a freakish athlete who had a great season and covers a ton of ground. He could also rush the passer, so he did so much that BC needs it hurts to lose him.” - Mike Farrell, Rivals.com national recruiting director
