UCLA lost a commitment from one of the nation’s top players in the class of 2019 when four-star defensive back Chris Steele backed off his pledge Tuesday. Steele had been committed to UCLA since January but has been very active on the visit trail, taking trips to Stanford, Alabama, USC and others in recent weeks. With new schools joining the mix and a desire to take more visits, Steele reopened his commitment and said he will continue to consider the Bruins going forward.

Rivals.com examines the impact of Steele’s decision on a local, regional and national level. Each participant will grade the impact on a scale of 1-10, with one being little impact and 10 being a catastrophic to the class.

LOCAL REACTION

“Obviously a tough blow because Steele is looking like he'll be an elite recruit in the 2019 class. But in the big picture of things, Steele is still very high on UCLA and his final decision will probably come down to UCLA, Stanford or USC regardless of this week's decommitment. So the Bruins will have plenty of chances to get him to re-commit over the next 18 or so months.” – Edward Lewis, BruinSportsReport.com

Sting Score: My grade would be like a 3 or a 4, just because it's not like he's never going to reconsider committing to UCLA.

REGIONAL REACTION

“It's a major loss because Steele is one of the best defensive backs in the 2019 class, he seemed to want to see how UCLA did this season before making any moves and he plays at Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, a huge pipeline to UCLA and USC. His recruitment has taken off substantially in the last few months and after a few recent visits - including to Alabama and Stanford - Steele wanted to take some more trips and see what else is out there. Coach Jim Mora and position coach Demetrice Martin were a big reason why Steele committed to the Bruins in the first place, but now they're going to have to keep recruiting him against national powers if they want him in the 2019 UCLA class.” – Adam Gorney, Rivals.com recruiting analyst

NATIONAL REACTION

"I'd put it at a 5, right in the middle because we are looking at an early 2019 commitment. If this was a 2018, I'd put it much higher because he's a talented kid and looks like a future defensive leader and star. UCLA will still be in the mix, so the sting could go away altogether if he re-commits but right now I'd put it in the middle." – Mike Farrell, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director

What happens now: It’s always tough for a program to hold onto a high-profile recruit like Steele when he commits so early in the process, so expect UCLA to keep recruiting him going forward with hopes of getting him back in the fold. Stanford poses a serious threat, especially with the de-commitment coming so soon after his visit to campus and USC will also be a major player going forward. It’s tough to project which school is the favorite going forward, but Steele will likely get plenty of attention from coaches and recruiting fans as the 2019 cycle moves along.
