Every time a major program loses a key recruit, Rivals.com takes a look at how big of a blow it is to the respective school, analyzing it from a local and national level. To quantify the “sting” of each decommitment, we assign a score from 1-10, with one being no big deal and 10 being a catastrophic hit.

THE SITUATION

Over the summer, Lake McRee made a commitment to Texas. It made a whole lot of sense.

The 2021 three-star tight end from Austin (Texas) Lake Travis is a hometown kid, he grew up watching the Longhorns and his teammate, four-star quarterback Hudson Card, is going to play at Texas.

At the time of his commitment, McRee said he grew up a fan of the school and that he went to a lot of games at Texas. So, losing a talented, local prospect in the class does hurt.

But McRee also missed his junior season with a knee injury and the Longhorns do have other tight ends that they’re recruiting for their 2021 class.

Alabama, Auburn and Texas Tech all offered in late January as McRee’s recruitment stays busy. Right after his decommitment from Texas, Utah came through with an offer as well. The three-star tight end currently lists 20 offers.

LOCAL REACTION

It was expected. He’s been pretty open about evaluating other options and he’s been getting a lot of other offers. Texas is probably OK with it at this time. He’s a talented prospect but Texas has other tight ends on their list that they will pursue moving forward so I would say the sting factor is pretty low. — Jason Suchomel, Orangebloods.com

NATIONAL REACTION

This isn’t a huge deal for Texas as the Longhorns will probably even upgrade at the position down the line. McRee is a fine player but coming off injury there are question marks and I don’t see this hurting Texas much at all. — Mike Farrell, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director
