Speedy defensive back Damien Berry is the lone representative from the storied Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central program to play in the inaugural Offense-Defense All-American Bowl.
"It's cool," Berry said. "It should be another opportunity to get my name out there."
Berry will play in the defensive secondary for the East squad. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. Jan. 4 and will be televised live on ESPNU.
Though the 5-foot-11, 197-pounder projects as a defensive back at the college level, he has helped his high school team on the other side of the ball this year.
"I really haven't played much defensive back this year," he said. "I am a versatile player. I can play offense as well as defense. I am very quick at the hips as well as the feet."
He believes that his stint on offense, which included a long touchdown run in Glades Central's 27-15 loss to Duncan (S.C.) James F. Byrnes on national television in August, has gone well.
"It's been good," he said. "I've got more than 900 rushing yards and 16 or 17 touchdowns."
Berry believes that when he gets to college, he will find a home in the defensive secondary.
"I think I will play defensive back, but it really doesn't matter," he said. "I just want to be on the field helping my team. I would most likely be playing safety. Some of my strengths are my speed and my awareness of the ball."
Berry is a Rivals250 prospect and has earned a mid four-star rating (5.9) from Rivals.com.
Berry committed early in the process to Miami (Fla.), where his father James was a standout football player. He remains pledged to the Canes, but plans to visit LSU, UCLA and Florida officially. He adds that his father has helped him grow as a player and person.
"Now that I am in high school, we really are talking about football," he said. "He didn't really talk about football, he stressed more education."
Berry wants to major in business administration in college and hopes to someday own a business.
