Spitzer is a player to watch this fall in the Palmetto State.
A 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback, Spitzer could be a
sleeper prospect as his Hillcrest High School team adjusts its style from the
2001 season.
"Last year, we were a run-oriented team with a great
tailback," Spitzer said. "I mean, we were a smashmouth team. This year,
coach thinks we'll be at least 60-40 run, maybe 50-50, so as a quarterback, I'm
really excited about that."
Spitzer threw for more than 700 yards and seven
touchdowns with only one interception as a junior.
"Throwing the ball is my strength," he said. "Plus my
knowledge of the game and leadership skills."
His talents have attracted recruiting interest from
Georgia Tech, East Carolina, Wake Forest, Rutgers, Central Florida, Temple and
South Carolina. He's yet to receive an official scholarship offer, but has been
told by the staffs at Georgia Tech, East Carolina, Wake Forest and Rutgers that
they'll be closely monitoring his first two or three games.
"I don't really have a favorite right now, but East
Carolina, Georgia Tech and Rutgers are on top," he said. "I like something about
each of them. It would be a privilege to play at any of those schools."
Spitzer pointed to the overall program, the coaching
staff and facilities at ECU and Georgia Tech. He noted that Rutgers "is a little
further away," but has developed a strong relationship with the Scarlet Knights'
coaches. "I like the overall campus environment there, too."
