Spencer makes a commitment

Asheville (N.C.) A.C. Reynolds athlete Darius Spencer made an abrupt decision to end his recruitment by making a commitment. Who did the 5-foot-10, 178-pounder select?
"I committed to East Carolina, I think it was last Friday," he said. "I think it was the best fit for my family and I. We thought about it and it's the best place for me."

What made Spencer decide on the Pirates over offers from North Carolina State, Marshall and North Carolina?
"I felt really good about my commitment," he said. "I like the coaching staff, atmosphere and fans. I think I can take them to a championship. They also have good academics there and the chance for playing time was big too.
"They think I can come in and play as a freshman at running back. They think I fit in well with their scheme because I have a lot of speed. I just have to battle for the spot with the other tailbacks and work hard. It's nice that they aren't too far down the road from here either."
Of course, the coaches played a part in the decision too.
"I got to know my recruiter, Donnie Kirkpatrick," he said. "He's a nice person that knows his stuff. I like him."
While Spencer is committed to East Carolina, he's still leaving the door open for other schools.
"I am going to camp at ECU, but I'm also looking at going to ones at Clemson and North Carolina too. I will probably look around a bit, but I feel good about my decision."
