Southern Miss first to offer TN quarterback

Briarcrest Christian head coach Major Wright received the news last night and Southern Miss made the offer official to quarterback Chris Campbell Thursday afternoon.
"They called my coach and told him Wednesday night that they wanted to offer me and then they faxed the offer to my school today," said Campbell.

"I was kind of expecting it, but it also surprised me a little. I sent them my highlight tape and I had heard that they liked my film and they invited me to their Junior Day, so I knew they were interested. Still, it is my first offer, so that is always a little surprising."
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound quarterback knows a little about the Eagles program.
"My old coach Carly Powers played for them, so I have heard some things from him about the program," he said.
"I also know several people there, I know they have great tradition, and they hired Coach [Larry] Fedora and he likes to throw the ball, so that is great. I like what I know about them."
First offers at times catapult schools to the top of prospect's lists, but Campbell is not ready to name them as his leader just yet.
"It is big for me," the Tennessee quarterback said of his Southern Miss offer, "but I am happy to get it, but I am still open to other schools too."
"I like Southern Miss, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Tennessee, Lousiville, and some others."
He thinks one of his favorites could be the next to offer.
"I have in touch with Vanderbilt a lot and I am going up there for their Junior Day on March 22. I talked directly to Coach [Warren] Belin and he says that Coach Bobby Johnson has given them clearance to offer me if the quarterback coach agrees."
"I am getting a strong feeling from them that they are close to offering me. The coaching staff loved my tape and I know Coach Johnson approved the offer, so I hope to get an offer from them soon."
After Vanderbilt's Junior Day on March 22, Campbell will visit Louisville on April 5.
