Soph OT picking up momentum

One of the things J.P. Urquidez was hoping for in his move to the Washington D.C. area was more exposure. That has never been a problem for players at Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha. Since starting at his new school Urquidez's recruitment has begun to pick up speed.
"I started off the recruiting process a little bit slower than some of these other guys," said the 6-foot-6, 293-pound Urquidez. "Things have gotten pretty crazy lately though. I wasn't expecting all this."

Over the last few weeks, Urquidez has added five new scholarship offers in addition to the Baylor offer that he got while living in Texas.
"Adding that Baylor offer to start off with was great," he said. "West Virginia was next then Virginia Tech, Maryland and Wisconsin. Four offers in one week is pretty amazing.
"I know West Virginia runs a spread offense and I like that," said Urquidez. "I'm used to playing in the spread from last year in Texas. I don't have many connections there but I do like their offense.
"To be honest with you, I don't know too much about Maryland," he said. "I know they have some nice jerseys and the stadium is nice. I'll be visiting is summer.
"I'll be going to a few Virginia Tech games this summer also," Urquidez said. "Coach Searels invited me down there. There's definitely a connection with coach Searels and I. We met last summer at the Texas camp. He's seen me play a couple times. I like him a lot and he's a good guy to be around.
"I haven't talked to Wisconsin's coach's yet," he said. "My coach just text me saying they offered. I know they run the ball up there. They had Montee Ball and they're known of running the ball and having big offensive linemen. I like to run block so I definitely like that offense."
Urquidez is getting the exposure he was hoping for and more schools are very interested I'm him.
"I know Florida is very high on me," said Urquidez. "Nebraska is also my high in me. I talked to coach Christ from there recently."
Urquidez already has a few schools in mind that he really likes.
"I'm not necessarily looking for a lot of offers," he said. "Sure, that'd be nice but I'm looking for the right offers from coaches that I can have a relationship with. Some offers are domino offers, they just offer because another school offered.
"I definitely like Texas A&M a lot," Urquidez said. "I've been up there a few times. They haven't offered yet but we've been in contact with them. They really want me down there. I really like the program down there and coach B.J. Anderson is a really good guy.
"I really like Baylor too," he said. "The coaches down there are great and I have a good connection with coach Norwood and coach Clements."
In an effort to get even more exposure, Urquidez is planning a few summer visits with long time friend and new teammate Shane Simmons.
"All of these schools are shocked at how big I am in person because it's hard to tell on my film," said Urquidez. "I'm going to Texas on June 1 for their mini camp. Hopefully that will speed up the recruiting process. I'll also be at Texas A&M on June 8. The coaches there really want to see how I move my feet.
"Shane and I will be going on a lot of visits this summer," he said. "On the drive up to Maryland well be going through LSU, Auburn and Alabama."
Navy has also offered Urquidez.
