Sooners pull four-star from Calif.

Oklahoma has once again come into California and taken one of the state’s top prospects.

Four-star linebacker Addison Gumbs committed to the Sooners on Wednesday over UCLA, Washington and more than two dozen other offers as the Big 12 program continues to dip into California and land top recruits. In its 2016 class, OU pulled one five-star and two four-stars out of California. Gumbs is the second California native to commit in the 2017 class.

“I just had a great time when I went down there I believe last April,” Gumbs said. “It felt like home. They treated me like family.

“I felt like coach Mike Stoops, the first day of spring recruiting, he was at my school, so that made a really big impression on me. I feel like I fit really great into their scheme and I feel like I could be a great fit and win some championships with coach Stoops.”

Oklahoma is the defending Big 12 champs and made the College Football Playoff last season. There is tremendous history and tradition in Norman and those were some considerations Gumbs made throughout the decision-making process.

“It definitely played a factor, a lot of tradition and the rich football history there,” Gumbs said. “There is a chance to compete not only for a Big 12 championship but a national championship every year. That was very intriguing to me but not only me, to a lot of student-athletes.

“They feel like I can play all around. I can play inside, outside so I feel like I’m a very versatile linebacker. If they use me all around, that is great because I feel I can play a lot of spots.”

The Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep linebacker plans to shut down his recruitment. He is not planning on takng any official visits except to Oklahoma and Gumbs wants to help the Sooners polish off their 2017 recruiting class that now features an impressive 12 four-stars.

“My plan was originally to help to recruit for the school, but it doesn’t seem like Oklahoma needs any help recruiting.”
