SMU QB commit William Brown sitting tight with Mustangs

Will Brown would like to make one thing clear: He will be SMU’s quarterback commit in this class.

A look at his offer list might underwhelm those that aren’t familiar with him, but that’s because he lets it be known that he’s certainly bound to be a Mustang. Brown said at last weekend’s Dominate The Day event in Houston, Texas, that outside of a couple of new follows on Twitter, coaches from other schools aren’t even making a play for him anymore.

“None, really,” he said. “I closed my recruiting status. My main focus is SMU, talking with my coaches, getting better throughout the season, bettering my teammates and myself.”

Part of that focus is keeping recent wide receiver commit, Michael Woods in the fold as well. Woods, who committed to the Mustangs in February has the makings of a No. 1 receiver in this class, and even though Brown didn’t know much about him prior to his commitment, he’s working quickly to build a rapport between them.

“I met him at The Opening regional and he was friends with one of my friends that plays on my team,” he said. “My friend was like ‘you know Mike, right?’ and I didn’t, he was like ‘yeah, he’s committed to SMU’ … I’m just focused on keeping him in the class, he’s definitely one of the top receivers.”

Brown wasn’t able to attend the Mustangs recent Friday Night Lights event, but said that he’s anxious to get back on campus this spring. He said that offensive coordinator Joe Craddock is his closest contact and that spending more time with his future position coach is also a top priority.

“That’s my main guy,” Brown said of Craddock. “I talk to him all the time, that’s a wonderful coach. Him, Chad Morris, the whole coaching staff is like a big family out there. It’s crazy, that’s a team on the rise.”

A team on the rise, indeed. Brown has high hopes for what SMU will do this year on the heels of its best season since 2013. He thinks that with another strong campaign, his recruiting class will be one to remember in 2018.

“It’s going to be a strong class this year,” he said. “Especially with 2017 class that’s coming in right now.”
