Smith in pursuit of additional offers

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - A 2017 prospect, Derrick Smith's recruitment hasn't exactly limped out of the gate. The Fleming Island (Fla.) High School wide receiver holds five scholarship offers already, and this spring will likely bring more schools the table.
As of now, Utah, USF, UCF, North Carolina and Kentucky have made things official with the , but Smith is hungry for more. He'll hit the roads for camps and other unofficial visits this offseason hoping to grab additional offers in the process. And while there's no schedule set in stone as of now, ideas for destinations are popping up.

Smith has what he calls a rough plan.
"I'm going to visit Clemson, Florida State and two more other schools," Smith said. "I'm not sure on those two yet, though. Just Clemson and Florida State for sure."
According to Smith, A Clemson offer is teetering on the verge of being expected. And while nothing is ever certain in recruiting, he feels pretty good about his chances of landing the invite soon. The way he tells it, he has reason for optimism.
"They told me they're probably going to offer me when I go down there for junior day," Smith said. "I'm going to go down there and get it, I hope."
Smith isn't prepared to declare an early frontrunner or name any sort of favorite in the process. Still, some schools seem to have his attention more than others.
"I really can't tell who stands out right now, but I like UCF and North Carolina," Smith said. "I like them a lot and look at them a lot. I watched them a lot this year and liked both of them."
Smith says he plans to make a verbal commitment sometime around the conclusion of his junior season.
