Smalling reacts to first Wisconsin visit

After adding an offer from Wisconsin in early September, Chicago (Ill.) Brother Rice 2017 wide receiver Ricky Smalling was able to make his first visit to Madison this past weekend.

"That was my first college game actually going to," Smalling said. "It was great. There were so many people there. The student section was great and the atmosphere was amazing."
Smalling made the trip up to Wisconsin with his uncle and a close friend. He connected with the Badger's coaches after arriving on campus.
"I talked to Coach (Ted) Gilmore and the defensive line coach, Coach Tibs (Tim Tibesar)," Smalling said. "They just said 'what's up' and asked how everything was going, making sure the visit was going good. I didn't really know Coach Gilmore, but I talk to Coach Tibs a lot. That's my recruiter. We talk at least once a week."
The visit to Wisconsin gave Smalling a taste of what football was like in Madison, and whet his appetite for return visits.
"I would like to go up there and visit some more just to get familiar with the coaches and environment," Smalling said. "From what I've seen right now, I like it."
Besides Wisconsin, Smalling also holds offers from Illinois and Virginia. He plans his next college game visit to Illinois on Oct. 24 when the Illini are set to play host to Wisconsin.
"I'm just going down there for the game and see how everything is going," Smalling said. "I actually didn't pick the game; my mom did because that was a day she was free and able to take me down there.
"I haven't really talked to anybody (at Illinois) in awhile, but I know what things are like and the type of offense they run."
The 6-foot-1, 189-pound Smalling has been dominant for his Brother Rice offense this season. They are off to a 5-1 start and Smalling has nine receiving touchdowns in those six games.
