Fredericksburg (Va.) Chancellor defensive end Clinton Simpkins will be taking his first official visit this weekend. Where is the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder planning on heading for the trip?
"He's actually going to Michigan State on Saturday," Simpkins assistant coach Chris Lamb said. "He's flying up there to take an official. It was definite as of last night.
"Michigan State and Kentucky are the biggest suitors right now. East Carolina, NC State and West Virginia have filled their spots. Michigan State hasn't offered, hopefully they come through this weekend so he can sign on the dotted line on Signing Day."
Kentucky continues to be in the mix as well.
"He hasn't gotten down there for a visit," he said. "Their coaches came up right before Christmas, we haven't heard from them in awhile."
While Simpkins is the one remaining prospect for Chancellor this year, 2010 has possibly three more recruits to watch.
"We have three kids that will be seniors next year," he said. "One is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback Diamante Kelly. He had eight interceptions as a sophomore and five as a junior.
"He's most definitely a Division I kid. He has the body and was all-district the past two years. Schools already know about him when they came in for our seniors.
"We also have another cornerback, 5-foot-8, 170-pounder, Tony Russell. He had eight or nine interceptions as a junior. He is tenacious and was all-district this year.
"Finally, we have a safety, wide receiver, Darian Talley. He has to work on his speed, but has great hands and is very athletic. He had three or four touchdowns on offense this year."
Also of note, Chancellor features a sophomore to watch too.
"The next one is Micah Cunningham, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound quarterback who is probably an athlete. He had 1,000 yards rushing and over 1,000 passing."
