THE SITUATION: Four-star quarterback Jeffery Sims announced his decision to sign with Georgia Tech on Wednesday morning after a long commitment to Florida State met a harsh end when he and the Seminoles mutually parted ways a few weeks back. Sims’ split with FSU came on the heels of the program tabbing Mike Novell as its next head coach, sending the quarterback in search of a system that better fit his skill set. On signing day, he announced he’d found such a thing in Geoff Collins’ Yellow Jackets.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR GEORGIA TECH
A bet on Sims is a bet on upside and a coaching staff’s ability to develop quarterbacks. The Jacksonville-area star has the build and arm strength to become a star in Atlanta. His battle has always been and will continue to be with consistency.
Simms is capable of making throws that cause onlookers' jaws to drop. He’s also capable of making a string of bad mistakes. His highlight film is impressive, but he completed just 51 percent of his passes as a senior. If his accuracy and consistency catches up with his raw natural talent, Georgia Tech may have a star on its hands. Still, Sims will become as good as the coaching he receives allows him to become, which will make his career an uninteresting one to monitor.
If Sims develops quickly and meets his potential at Tech, this situation will look like quite a blunder for FSU and quite a fortunate win for the Jackets. These types of players sometimes pay massive dividends
