Sidney, Bruce come up big

BALTIMORE -- When Kareem Walker yelled, "we need a mercy rule" following his team's 23-7 victory in the 7-on-7 championship of the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour, it drew a reaction. There was laughter in his voice but some truth behind his statement.

The five-star running back had a point.
He and the Team Swarm group he led marched through the evening with an undefeated record and won their share of blowouts en route to the championship. And while Walker delivered the day's most interesting quote, it was that day's wide receiver MVP Trevon Sidney, along with four-star wideout Sam Bruce, that helped power the Team Swarm offense to the tournament championship game with more than six combined touchdowns on the day.
Swarm got solid defensive contributions from defensive backs William Poole III and JoeJuan Williams, but the day's defensive back MVP went to Long Beach (Calif.) High School Jack Jones, who led his team to the title game while playing both sides of the ball. Jones made an impact as a wide receiver but left his true mark on defense, where he made multiple interceptions and shut down a number of five-star receivers.
Quarterback MVP Victor Viramontes saw his squad, Team Flurry, finish third out of four teams, but was successful in the individual morning session. Finishing last place in the evening's event was Team Stealth, which failed to win a single game despite having the day's linebacker MVP, Lyndell Wilson.
The day's championship series was set to be a two-out-of-three game set between Team Swarm and Team Tumblr, but a third game was not necessary after Swarm captured the first two games. Tight end Naseir Upshur, who had been quiet until the final series, caught three touchdown passes in Swarm's final two games to help it clinch the championship.
Other notable performances came from Florida State commit tight end Isaac Nauta, and wide receiver T.J. Chase of Team Flurry. Team Tumblr receiver DeKaylin Metcalf also turned in a notable effort that included multiple touchdown receptions.
