Shivers makes the early call: It's Auburn

RELATED: Video analysis of Shiver's commitment to Auburn

Shaun Shivers’ commitment to Auburn on Wednesday came early. The class of 2018 prospect knows he has miles to walk until he signs a letter of intent more than a year from now. It’s just that he doesn’t much care. In his mind, he’s found his home. In his mind, waiting for the sake of waiting seems silly.

It’s not as though the four-star prospect didn’t give his choice careful thought.

“When I went up (to Auburn) to a visit – a few times – it was always the atmosphere of the program that convinced me” Shivers said. “It was actually the atmosphere and that the coaching staff always showed me that I’m a top priority for them. It’s the love and how they want to use me in the offense.”

Shivers is self-aware when it comes to his niche. He understands that his 5-foot-5 height presents some issues at the college level. He also knows that the fact that he’s one of Florida’s best high school sprinters makes his speed a weapon.

Then again, Shivers elite quickness isn’t lost on anyone. It’s why he carries a long list of major scholarship offers. It’s why Auburn already has grand plans to utilize him.

“They are going to use me all over the field,” Shivers said. “I’m going to be in the backfield, in the slot and maybe even return some kicks.”

In the end, Shivers’ announcement, which took place on a South Florida radio show, was a formality. The star running back had committed to the Tigers’ coaching staff days before he made things public. The public declaration was simple pomp.

“I told the coaches a few days ago,” Shivers said. “They were so fired up. They were just saying they couldn’t wait until I announce it to everyone.”

The No. 195 prospect in the class of 2018, Shivers is currently working to find a date for another visit to Auburn this fall. He has no current plans to tour other schools, but may do so down the road. He attends Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna Preparatory Academy, where he’s rushed for 663 yards in seven games this season according to Maxpreps.com.
